HISTORY

Hlongwa CBO Network (HCBON) was established in 2001 as a community based organisation. HCBON is located in a deep rural village called Thafamasi Reserve which is an area within the municipal boundaries of Maphumulo Local Municipality under the Ilembe District Municipality. At district level the population is estimated at 157 692 and at Maphumulo the population is estimated at 19 739.

This village is characterized by high unemployment rate, lack of basic infrastructure services like access to health care services resulting in residents travelling about 26 kilometers to reach the local clinic, high level of unemployed youth, high rate of people infected with HIV and dying of Aids, and vulnerable groups including women, children and people living with disability who find themselves at the periphery of receiving services offered by government institutions.

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE

Hlongwa CBO Network has 27 years of experience in community development and has successfully implemented various programmes through partnerships with various strategic stakeholders as well as government institutions. Hlongwa CBO Network owns a building with 4 offices, has 250 volunters and is continuously receiving more volunteers on a monthly basis.

SPONSORS AND PROJECT FUNDERS

The Independent Development Trust (IDT) has been funding Hlongwa CBON Network for more than 6 years for stipend payments for beneficiaries (volunteers) offering Home Community Based Care under the Extended Public Works Program (EPWP) which is a None State Sector Program (NSS). This programme is funded by the Department of Public Works and IDT is an implementation Agency for the government.
